SOFT POWER

Sulai Lopez is an interdisciplinary artist and educator specializing in natural dyes, and utilizing textiles as a means to cultivate connection and creativity within communities. A weaver, thrifter, designer and upcycler, she studied theatre, film, and painting in New York City, has a past life working as an award winning costume designer in Los Angeles, and moonlights as an actor. Recently she studied with generational weavers and natural dyers in Oaxaca, Mexico, and has spent the last decade researching and experimenting with plants and natural fibers. In 2023 she collaborated with Huni Kuin master artisans, deep in the Amazon rainforest, to scour and mordant their hand-spun cotton using only jungle-foraged materials. She is currently based in the Pacific Northwest where she grows her own dye plants and facilitates art workshops throughout the west coast.
